The Story Behind TravelRow and Filippi Boats
At TravelRow we do not simply work with Filippi Boats as a partner brand. Our connection with Filippi is part of our personal rowing history.
Filippi Boats started building racing shells in Italy in the 1980s and over the years became one of the most respected boat builders in the world. In the beginning Filippi became famous especially for sculling boats, known for their speed, balance and technical innovation.
But around the end of the 1990s something important happened in sweep rowing.
The Italian Men’s Coxless Four became one of the most respected crews in world rowing during the 1990s. Between 1994 and 1996 the crew won major international races rowing in Empacher boats and also set a world best time.
Later the Italian crew decided to move to Filippi because the feeling and balance of the boat suited their rowing style better.
At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games the Italian Men’s Coxless Four won the silver medal in one of the most legendary Olympic rowing races ever, racing against the British crew of Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent.
That Italian crew included:
Riccardo Dei Rossi
Lorenzo Carboncini
Carlo Mornati
Valter Molea
The crew raced in a Filippi boat.
For many people in the rowing world this was one of the first major moments that confirmed Filippi could compete at the very highest Olympic level not only in sculling boats but also in sweep rowing boats.
That Olympic race became part of the growth of Filippi as an international reference in high performance rowing.
Today Filippi Boats are used by Olympic champions, national teams and rowing clubs all over the world and are considered among the fastest and most advanced racing shells in international rowing.
For us this partnership is not only commercial. It is personal.
Riccardo Dei Rossi was part of that Olympic silver medal crew in Sydney 2000 and still today brings that experience and rowing culture into every TravelRow camp, tour and rowing experience we create.
This is why TravelRow is proud to work together with Filippi Boats and to share authentic Italian rowing culture with clubs, masters rowers and athletes from around the world.
